Peñíscola has been the setting for the filming of films such as Ana Cadova (1914), La alegría del batallón (1924), La vida es maravillosa (1955), Calabuch (1956), Los bucaneros del Mar Caribe (1960), El Cid (1961), Todos eran culpables (1962), ¡Jo, papa! (1967), Aluncinaciones (1978), El hijo del cura (1982), El cura ya tiene hijo (1984), Fuga de la isla del diablo (1984), Tramontana (1990), El día nunca por la tarde (1994), Tierra (1995), París Tombuctú (1999), Mataharis (2007), Pizza Eli (2008). Sinterklaas (2009), Fin (2012), Blink (2013), among other. 

One of the most important has been El Cid (1961) directed by Anthony Mann and starring Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren. The story unfolds in a fictional world of medieval character where there are Seven Kingdoms. Lord Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark, Lord of Winterfell, leaves his domains to go to the court of his friend, King Robert Baratheon at King’s Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. Stark becomes the hand of the King and tries to unravel a tangle of intrigue that will endanger his life and that of all his relatives. Meanwhile various factions conspire with a single objective: to seize the throne.
